Mount Washington Elementary Educator Named Teacher of the Year

Fifth-grade teacher Margaret May was surprised with the award on Monday.

Margaret May, a fifth-grade teacher at Mount Washington Elementary School, was named the city's Teacher of the Year on Monday.

May, who teaches language arts and social studies, was surprised with the award in her classroom by Baltimore City Public Schools CEO Andres Alonso.

“Every day of the year we see excellent teaching and learning in our classrooms, but on this one day each year we get to lift up the work of one particular educator, and for me this is a true honor. We get a glimpse into the great work of one individual teacher, and in turn celebrate the incredibly hard work and dedication of so many,” Alonso said in a press release.

During the past two years, 100 percent of May's students have scored proficient or advanced on the Maryland School Assessment reading test.

She will now represent Baltimore for the statewide Teacher of the Year award.
