Mount Washington School Keeps Pushing for $50,000

The Mount Washington School (MWS), a National Blue Ribbon public school in northwest Baltimore, is competing with more than 2,500 other schools across the country for a $50,000 grant from the Clorox Power a Bright Future grant program.

If successful, MWS would use the grant funds to improve play spaces, add computers in every classroom, and support the new International Baccalaureate (IB) program for the middle grades. The school is currently ranked #16 in the “Explore” category. There are more than 1,500 schools competing in this category.

“The community is energized and it has been a delight to see how teachers, staff, students, parents and partners have come together to support our bid,” said Principal Sue Torr. “We have moved so quickly in the ranks and, today at #16, we are so close. But only number one wins the grand prize.”

Voting began on November 12th and will continue until December 19th at 11:59 pm. The community has mounted an aggressive campaign including blanketing area shops, homes, and restaurants with flyers and posters, sending out mass emails, creating a Twitter account (@VoteMWS), and other strategies. Orioles’ players, Ravens’ players, celebrities and politicians have gotten on board and re-tweeted the school’s information to their followers. The students have even created a mountwashingtonschool.org/video, declaring “I am Mount Washington” to get out the vote.

"MWS is truly the centerpiece of our community,” said Ira Kolman, president of the Mount Washington Improvement Association. “Winning this grant will help defray costs of important enrichment needs that the school system cannot afford to pay for. I encourage everyone to VoteMWS!”
