Area students have renewed their Carson Scholarships for academic and volunteer works.

Carson Scholarships are awarded to "high-achieving students in grades 4-11 who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and humanitarian qualities," according to a news release from Baltimore County Public Schools.

Five students renewed their Carson Scholarships:

714 students nationwide have renewed their Carson Scholar status as previous winners.

The scholars from the Mid-Atlantic will be honored at an awards banquet April 7 at Martin's West in Woodlawn. The event is open to the public.

Newscaster Sam Donaldson will be master of ceremonies.

Dr. Ben Carson, a renowned pediatric neurosurgeon, will be keynote speaker.
