Notre Dame of Maryland Names First Male President

James F. Conneely currently serves as provost at Eastern Kentucky University.

announced its new president on Thursday.

James F. Conneely will serve as president of the university founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame 116 years ago, according to a press release.

Not only will Conneely be the first male president of the school, but also only the second layperson to serve in that position.

The 55-year-old Conneely currently serves as Eastern Kentucky University’s provost and vice president of student affairs, according to a biography emailed by Notre Dame. 

He will be replacing the first layperson to serve as university president, when she retires on June 30.
