Plan Proposing New Hampden School Set for Vote

The Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners is scheduled to vote on a proposed 10-year facilities plan that recommends replacing the former Robert Poole Middle School in Hampden, currently home to the Academy for College and Career Exploration, during the proposal’s first year. 

The building plan recommends replacing the school as opposed to rehabbing it because it’s expected to cost $27.9 million dollars to construct a new school compared to an estimated $21.9 million to rehab the facility.

Commissioners are expected to cast their votes on the plan during a meeting scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Tuesday at school headquarters, located at 200 E. North Ave., according to the advocacy group Transform Baltimore’s website. 

The plan also calls for the closing of 26 schools in the city, none of which are located in North Baltimore. But all of the schools in the area would be at least renovated under the proposed plan.
