Former "Boys of Baraka" student among those running for District 12 City Council seat

The "Boys of Baraka" was an award winning movie about a group of at-risk African-American youth who went to Kenya to receive education.

Odette Ramos is not the only for Baltimore City Council in District 12.  As of May 15, 2011, at 9 a.m., the Maryland State Board of Elections website lists a total of five registered candidates, including Ramos.

One announced candidate is De'von Brown, a former "Boys of Baraka" student. 

Brown is 21 years old.  He announced his candidacy in April.

The "Boys of Baraka" was an award winning movie about a group of at-risk African-American youth who went to Kenya to receive an education.  The movie followed the children in their East Baltimore neighborhood and in Kenya. 

The Baraka school changed Brown's life "dramatically," according to his campaign website.

Brown says in a campaign video that: 

"I am a proud product of the East Baltimore community.  Born here.  Live here.  Went to school here. And attend church in this district." 

Brown has been a community activist in East Baltimore and in 2009 he became a board member of Taharka Brothers Ice Cream, a non-profit organization that teaches inner city young men entrepreneurship skills, and life skills. 

Other announced candidates for the City Council in District 12 are Jason Curtis, Jermaine Jones, Robert R. Stokes.

It is not known if candidate Robert R. Stokes is any relation to Councilman Carl Stokes who currently represents Distirct 12. Councilman Stokes has indicated that he will be running for mayor. 

The Maryland State Board of Elections does not list Councilman Stokes as filing for a run for any office as of May 15, 2011, at 9 a.m.
