Bryn Mawr Beats Rival Roland Park Country School in Lacrosse, 15-9

Mawrtian goalie Molly Wolf turns in strong effort; six players score goals for BMS.

It started out in the rain, was delayed 50 minutes due to thunder and lightning yet ended in sunshine, especially for Bryn Mawr, as the visitors topped neighborhood rival Roland Park Country School in IAAM A conference girls lacrosse action on Tuesday, 15-9.

The Mawrtians were led by a superb effort in goal by junior Molly Wolf, who had 15 saves, several in the pivotal opening minutes when Bryn Mawr jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Assisted by a smothering defense, Wolf continued to deny the Reds throughout the game.

“I could see the ball really well, and the defense helped me a lot,” Wolf said in a post-game interview. “Josie George, Nancy Dunbar, Kate Walker and Cecilia Depmanall four of them were phenomenal today,” Wolf said of the Mawrtian defense.

“They were quick, they could see the ball, they had checks, they got ground balls,” she said.

Mawrtian coach Wendy Kridel noted an all-around effort from the team.

“We had a lot of great play from different players all over the field,” Kridel said.  “My goalie played fantastic today, a couple of defenders just had some great play, we had attackers scoring,” she said.

Bryn Mawr jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, then slightly more than two minutes into the contest both teams headed to the locker room when thunder boomed and lightning was seen.

When play resumed, the Mawrtians scored three more times before Roland Park answered with four goals to narrow the game to 5-4. Bryn Mawr scored twice more in the first half, with the last coming with just 11 seconds to play.

Bryn Mawr scored the first two goals of the second half, and Roland Park answered with two of its own, followed by each team trading goals to make the score 10-7 in favor of Bryn Mawr with 17:13 left to play.  A five-goal run by the Mawrtians sealed the outcome. The Reds scored the final two goals of the contest, the last with 12 ticks left on the game clock.

Morgan Rubin scored four unassisted goals and assisted on two others to lead the list of six scorers in the well-rounded Bryn Mawr offense. In addition to Rubin, teammates Kassandra Bowling and Kate Snouffer each had three goals, with Snouffer adding two assists. Other Mawrtian scorers included Sam McGee with two goals and two assists, Erica Matz with two goals, and Josie George with one goal. Kaleigh Noon had two assists.

Audrey Todd paced Roland Park with three goals. The Reds’ Caroline Seats scored twice and had an assist. Mattie Meredith, Meggie Ramzy and Betsy Angel each had a goal and an assist for Roland Park, with a goal by CeCe Finney and a Daniela Eppler assist rounding out the RPCS scoring.

Roland Park coach Kristen Nicolini cited the Bryn Mawr defense as a key to the game.

“Their goalkeeper was great,” Nicolini said. “Time and again we were shooting and not making shots and it turns up being a turnover and it heads back down the other way,” she said.

“They’re a good defensive team and we didn’t have as many opportunities as we typically have on our attacking end. We were trying to spread it out, but it’s hard when our girls are going in and they have girls standing in the eight meter [attack zone].”

For goalie Wolf, the annual game against Roland Park is fun.

“I like the energy of this gameit always brings out a big crowd,” she said.

“It’s a big rivalry. It’s massive.”
