About Dragon Boat Racing

Find out what's happening in North Baltimorewith free, real-time updates from Patch.

The sport of dragon boat racing dates back 2,500 years or more. The Chinese crafted the first dragon boat to honor the life of Chu Yuan, a poet and politician who cared deeply for his people. Today dragon boat racers celebrate that rich history through friendly competition. Dragon boating is similar to crew in that it is a water-based paddling sport, but a dragon boat holds 20 paddlers and a steerer. In place of a coxswain, there is a drummer who pounds out the rhythm of the paddlers. During competition, the front of each 45-foot-long dragon boat is adorned with a sculpted dragon's head.

About the Baltimore Dragon Boat Club

The Baltimore Dragon Boat Club is a 501(c)(3) organization formed in 2008 to advance the 2,500-year-old sport of dragon boat racing through competition, while generating its greater awareness among Maryland residents. Tide Point Marina serves as the Club’s home base. The spirited group of like-minded paddling enthusiasts has fun and trains hard each Wednesday and Saturday (April - October) when preparing for a range of festivals and regattas.
