Friends Boys Gain First Place in Lacrosse Win over John Carroll

Quakers remain undefeated in MIAA B conference near mid-way point.

The Friends School boys lacrosse team took sole possession of first place in the MIAA B conference on Tuesday with a 9-6 win over previously undefeated John Carroll in a game played at Friends.

The win capped a victorious lacrosse doubleheader at the Charles Street school.  The girls team won an exciting 19-12 game over the Institute of Notre Dame in the opener.

The Quaker boys jumped out to a 4-0 first-quarter lead, took a 7-0 margin to the half and then held off a furious second-half charge by the Patriots. The Quakers'  league record is 6-0, and the team is 6-1 overall.

Sophomore midfielder Dan Warren scored four goals, including the final Quaker tally with 9:43 left to play in the fourth quarter that made the score 9-3.  John Carroll scored the final three goals, two in extra-man situations, to pull the game to within three. But Quaker goalie James Whitlow deflected a shot with 45 seconds left to play and had one last save at the final horn to thwart the final Patriot chances.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our kids,” Friends coach Jon Garman said after the game. “We had a few guys out; everybody we put in played hard and did something productive.”

The Quakers were missing their primacy faceoff midfielder, along with a starting attackman, his back-up and a defensive midfielder.

“We learn not to pay much attention [to the injuries] because we play with who is there,” Garman said.  “We love the kids on the sidelines but we got to play with those who are there.”

Garman noted the leadership of the seniors on the team, especially the three starting defensemen, Michael John, Matt Collins and Jon Schmidt.

“Our seniors have been great leaders, the senior defense in particular,” Garman said. “Everybody just takes their lead from them.”

Garman also cited junior midfielder Paul Orrson as having a “terrific” game.  Orrson had two assists, and one of his shots led to another goal when Warren pounced on a rebound in the first quarter to score the second of his four goals.

Michael Sweet scored twice for the Quakers, with Jason Schon, Alex Schulick and David Magdeburger accounting for the other Friends goals. Schmidt had two assists, while Schulick and Magdeburger added one each.

J.D. Robinson, who started the game in goal for the Quakers, had an outstanding first half, turning away several Patriot shots to keep the game a shutout at the half.

Penalties plagued Friends in the second half, with the Patriots scoring three of their six goals in extra-man situations.

“That’s not like us,” Garman said of the multiple penalties. “[We were] getting a little leg weary and throwing some sticks instead of moving some legs.” It was the second game in as many days for the team, as was also the case for John Carroll.

Garman said the two goalies—Robinson and Whitlow—have been splitting duty the last few games.

“We’re trying to get both kids a good run,” he said. “We like that combination.”

Ricky DeMicco led the Patriot scorers with three goals, while August Pons had four assists. John Carroll’s record is now 4-1.
