Charles Village Court Watch

June Stansbury, who is charged with attempted first degree murder and other serious crimes allegedly committed in the 600 block of East 27th Street, had his case postponed today in Circuit Court.

June Stansbury, age 28, is charged with attempted first degree murder of two persons, and with burglary, armed robbery, conspiracy and weapons charges involving several victims on February 27, 2012 in the 600 block of East 27th Street.  He was scheduled for trial this morning at 11 in part 46 reception court, room 556 Courthouse East before Judge Alfred Nance.

At 11:27, Stansbury was led into the courtroom by a correctional officer, and at 11:31 Judge Nance had him brought to the defense table.  For the next four minutes, there was a bench conference among Judge Nance, defense attorney Andrea Jaskulsky and Assistant State's Attorney Katie O'Hara.  Then, Judge Nance said to the defendant: "Sir, speak to your lawyer."  The defendant and his attorney could be seen conferring at length.

At 11:44, the case was called, and a two minute sidebar followed immediately.  Three minutes later, the prosecutor asked for time to go out in the hallway to call her witnesses to learn of a good date for them.  Two minutes later, she was back, she conferred with the court clerk and the defense attorney, and she called the case again.

The defense attorney stated that she was requesting a postponement for further research.  Judge Nance had her advise her client that he would have to waive Hicks (the Maryland speedy trial rule).  The prosecutor objected to the postponement and stated that she was ready for trial.  Judge Nance ruled that there was good cause for a postponement and set the new trial date for Tuesday, July 9 at 2 p.m. in the same courtroom.  It was also stated that all deals (plea offers) were now off the table.

At 11:54, the case was done for the day.
