Charles Village Court Watch

June Stansbury, age 28, is charged with attempted first degree murder of two persons, and with burglary, armed robbery, conspiracy and weapons charges involving several victims on February 27, 2012 in the 600 block of East 27th Street.  He was scheduled for trial this afternoon at 2 in part 46 reception court, room 556 Courthouse East before Judge Alfred Nance.

At 2:38, there was a two minute bench conference about the case.  Stansbury was led into the courtroom at 3:02 by a correction officer.  The assistant state's attorney, who was filling in for the assistant state's attorney who has been assigned this case, called the case at 3:19.

Stansbury apparently wants to switch attorneys, and therefore his attorney, whom I will not name here, moved to strike her appearance (her formal notice to the court that she is representing Stansbury).  Judge Nance noted that there are speedy trial rules but that in this instance, the defendant was the one asking for the necessary postponement.  Judge Nance asked the defendant whether he had another private attorney or intended to obtain the services of the Public Defender.  The defendant said that he was not sure but that a friend would put up the money for a private attorney.  Judge Nance warned him to make sure that the has an attorney when he next appears in court if he wants the services of an attorney.  Trial was set for Monday, September 9 at 11.  According to the online case file, trial will be in room 540 Courthouse East.

My comment: The defendant apparently intends to replace an excellent defense attorney.  But it is his right to do so.
