The volunteer firefighter who was was critically injured during the April 24 fire in Reisterstown died Thursday at Maryland Shock Trauma. His funeral is set for Sunday.
It was a horrific fire April 24 that the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company was called to control. Volunteer firefighter Gene Kirchner, 25, and several others were searching the home at 19 Hanover Rd., trying to find a resident because "very, very agitated residents were screaming that someone was trapped," Baltimore County Fire Chief John Hohman said during a press conference Thursday afternoon. "Gene and others, they attempted to rescue the individual," Hohman said, calling the fire "horrific." Kirchner, a nine-year veteran of the company, died on Thursday at Maryland Shock Trauma after spending eight days in critical condition. The 25-year-old is the second fatality from a house fire April 24 at 19 Hanover Road in Reisterstown.
UPDATE (2:30 p.m.)--Volunteer Firefighter Gene Kirchner died Thursday afternoon at Maryland Shock Trauma, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department. The member of the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire company was critically injured April 24 while doing a search during a house fire at 19 Hanover Rd in Reisterstown. "It is with deep sorrow and regret that the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company announces the line of duty passing of Firefighter Gene Kirchner," according to a statement from the fire company. Kipp was famous for his hot sauces and rubs that he sold at local farmers markets.
Mick Kipp, the well-known bandana clad cook and hot sauce maker has died, according to various sources. Kipp, a one-time Hampden resident, was known throughout the city for serving food and spices at venues such as the 32nd Street Farmers’ Market, the former Mill Valley Garden Center and at Pickles Pub before ballgames. Kipp was also famous for his "pirate" persona; he was even named "Best Pirate" by the Baltimore City Paper in 2004. A post on the Mick T. Pirate at Whiskey Island Facebook page by Kipp on Saturday indicates he just finished a 30-mile hike in Harpers Ferry, W. Va. Follow Patch for Updates.
