Students at the GreenMount School in Remington have studied how the news media works and how it has developed throughout American history. On Thursday students in kindergarten through eighth grade performed skits demonstrating for their family and friends how the media works, explored seminal events in American history and then engaged in breakout groups to discuss the issues. The celebration was held at Waverly Elementary in school in the shadow of the new school being built.
Elected officials, educators and advocates gathered at Waverly Elementary School Monday to celebrate the General Assembly passing the Baltimore City Public Schools Construction and Revitalization Act of 2013. The celebration was held next door to a new elementary and middle school that has been under construction since last summer. The bill will allow for $1.1 billion through bonds issued via the Maryland Stadium Authority to build 15 new schools and renovate 30 buildings in Baltimore. Baltimore City Public Schools CEO Andres Alonso has resigned, according to a news statement from the school system. Alonso has been the head of city schools for the past six years and has implemented many, often controversial reforms, including giving individual principals control over their school’s budget, eliminating administrative positions at North Avenue and helping to introduce an ambitious 10-year building plan. Some of the school's greening projects haven’t always been popular with neighbors.
The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education has certified the Academy for College and Career Exploration in Hampden as a "green school." The school, which is located in the former Robert Poole Middle School building, 1300 W. 36th St., was granted the award earlier this week for its approach to making the school a more environmentally friendly structure. The Gilman School will try to win its second Baltimore President’s Cup baseball tournament in three years on Saturday. Gilman will face Archbishop Curley in the championship game at 1 p.m., at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, and entrance to the game is free. The President’s Cup tournament gives city private and public schools that might not otherwise play each other a chance to face off for bragging rights as the best in Baltimore. Fans who want to attend the game will be able to enter the stadium through home plate plaza, which is located near parking lot A. Food is permitted at the stadium but no hard side coolers, thermoses, glass bottles, cans or alcohol are permitted, according to a news release.

In a Wednesday evening town hall that drew education advocates from across the state, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan stressed the importance of early intervention when addressing gun violence in schools. "We literally, literally bury a child every two weeks because of gun violence," Duncan said to a crowd of approximately 400 people gathered at Loch Raven High School. The General Assembly approved the Baltimore City Public Schools Construction and Revitalization Act of 2013 and is expected to be signed by Gov. Martin O'Malley.
On Wednesday, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake touted the General Assembly’s approval of a bill that could result in up to $1.1 billion being spent on 15 new and 30 renovated city public schools. Rawlings-Blake, in a news release, called the Baltimore City Public Schools Construction and Revitalization Act of 2013 "one of the most significant legislative achievements for the City of Baltimore in modern history." The plan calls for the city and state to spend about $60 million a year to finance $1.1 billion in bonds issued by the Maryland Stadium Authority, which is largely funded by the state lottery. The money will be used to implement the 10-year building plan approved by the city schools last year and construction is scheduled to begin …

The Maryland House of Delegates Wednesday passed gun control legislation proposed by Gov. Martin O'Malley by a vote of 78-61. The amended bill bans 40 kinds of rifles including the AR15, requires fingerprinting and licensing of all purchasers of new guns and broadens the law prohibiting firearms purchases by anyone who is involuntarily committed because of mental illness. The bill was a major component of O'Malley's legislative package announced at the beginning of the 90-day session. The House of Delegates debated the bill for nearly 10 hours over two days.
