Bloomberg Donates $250M To Help Hopkins Tackle Global Issues

The gift brings the Michael Bloomberg's giving to Johns Hopkins University to $1 billion.

A promised $350 million donation from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will be used to help the university address some of the worlds most pressing problems with the rest being dedicated to need-based financial aid for undergraduates.  The $250 million will be used to raise $1 billion to help the university stimulate cross-disciplinary work to address the world’s largest global problems and $100 million will finance 2,600 Bloomberg Scholarships in the next 10 years, according to a news release. Hopkins Summit Seeks Gun Violence Solutions

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a Johns Hopkins alumnus, will deliver the opening remarks.

More than 20 experts will convene at Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Health’s Gun Policy Summit Monday to examine research on gun policy and its implications for policymakers, according to the university’s website. "To address this urgent public health problem, the experts will analyze the latest research and present clear, comprehensive recommendations for gun policies that will reduce gun violence, will have broad public support and will not violate constitutional rights," according to the university website. Bloomberg Philanthropies Offer $9M to Improve Cities

The Mayors Challenge seeks innovative ideas that can be implemented and replicated throughout the country.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s charitable organization is offering $9 million in prizes for cities to come up with ways to improve urban life. Bloomberg Philanthropies' "Mayors Challenge" is open to cities with at least 30,000 residents, and the deadline for applications is Sept. 14. There will be five winning cities selected, with a grand prize of $5 million and $1 million for the other four cities. "This challenge is all about identifying a need, solving a problem, and sharing your knowledge so that other cities and citizens can benefit from your insight and actions," according to the organizations website.
