BNote Marks 2 Years

The local currency is now accepted at 200 Baltimore-area businesses.

It started two years ago with only 55 businesses, but now BNotes are all grown up. The homegrown Baltimore currency is celebrating two years this month, having nearly quadrupled its base to 200 Baltimore-area firms. The local currency, which Patch wrote about at its inception, works like this. A shopper can visit one of 11 BNote cambios and for $10, get $11 in BNotes. The BNotes are accepted the same as cash, so shoppers essentially get a discount for using the currency. The BNote's creators will be at the Terra Cafe to meet BNote users and take questions as they celebrate the currency's birthday Wednesday at Terra Cafe from 7 to 9 p.m., according to an email newsletter. Do you use BNotes? How well do you think the currency has served …

My husband and I were really into BNotes when we first heard about them, but we have never once been asked if we wanted BNotes as change in local businesses. So every time we go get some, we spend it and that is that. No circulation. We do use credit cards a lot but still, not once in 2 years. I don't know if businesses are afraid to ask but we would love to get BNotes as change. If no one is …   more ›

Hampden's Dogwood Restaurant Closed, Owners Confirm

The restaurant, located on the Avenue, closed Mar. 17.

A mainstay on 36th Street has closed its doors for good. Dogwood Restaurant, formerly located at 911 W. 36th Street, has been shuttered since Sunday, the Baltimore Sun reports. Owner Galen Sampson posted to the business' Facebook page early Monday morning confirming the closure. "The Dogwood Restaurant is grateful to the Baltimore Community for its tremendous support over the past seven years. At The Dogwood, we tried to do something innovative and risky, and the city and its people have always supported us. We are very grateful to you," Sampson wrote on the business' Facebook page. "Unfortunately, we had to close the doors of the restaurant today, Saint Patrick's Day, Sunday March 17th 2013 because the business can no longer support …

We had my daughter's wedding reception at the Dogwood two years ago. The staff did a very good job. We had a tasting evening well before the wedding to decide on the menu and the wines. The groom and his mother have celiac and one guest has a sensitivity to onions. The staff made sure that they accommodated these individuals. The restaurant did a good job serving and made a great effort to make …   more ›

The chain will close its Rotunda location as part of the move.

Giant Food is buying two former Superfresh locations in Hampden and Parkville from Fresh & Green's, which had taken over the stores less than a year ago. Giant, the Baltimore area's largest grocer, announced the deal today with Mrs. Green's Management Corp. on Friday to buy the locations at 1020 West 41st St. in Hampden and 7709 Harford Road in Parkville. “Giant Food is excited about the opportunity to remodel and open two convenient locations for Baltimore-area customers,” Anthony Hucker, president of Giant Food, said in a statement. “We look forward to making significant improvements to the stores and to offering our unique combination of quality, value and service, which customers have come to expect from Giant for more than seven …

Expect tiny theaters to take over the entire floor. The cinema has already taken over the Tomlinson space to build another tiny theater. It would not surprise me at all if they try to continue that trend. Very sad news for the rotunda i'm afraid.   more ›
