Scheduling Conflict Forces Ravens To Open Away

The Orioles are scheduled to start a series in Baltimore with the Chicago White Sox on the day the NFL wanted to start its season.

Despite efforts on all sides to make an Orioles and Ravens doubleheader happen on Sept. 5, the Super Bowl champions will now open their season on the road. In the last few years, the Super Bowl champions have been granted the privilege of opening the season in prime time at home on Thursday. But because of a conflict with a previously scheduled O’s game the Ravens will now open on the road.  Both Baltimore teams released statements to the media praising each other for their cooperation in trying to overcome the conflict. The games would also be coming on the heels of the city hosting the third Baltimore Grand Prix from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1. Ravens Statement from President Dick Cass: "After thorough discussions among the Orioles, the NFL and …

Poll: Orioles Schedule Conflicts with Ravens’ Plans

The NFL would like the Ravens to open their season at home on Sept. 5, but the O’s already have a game scheduled.

Traditionally the Super Bowl champions get to play at home on the opening night of the season, but a scheduling conflict with the Orioles may make that impossible for the Ravens. The NFL would like to schedule the Ravens to open at home on Sept. 5, but the Orioles already have a home game with the Chicago White Sox. Moving the Ravens game back a day is not an option because of Rosh Hashanah. Vote in our poll and tell us how you'd handle it. Have a better idea? Share it with a comment below.

Open Thread: Share Your Predictions for the 2013 O’s

Pitchers and catchers reported to spring training in Sarasota, Fla. on Tuesday with sky-high expectations following the team’s first winning season since the 1990s.

Last year, the O’s took their fans on an unexpected trip to the post season. The team, which was nearly universally picked to finish last in the AL East before the 2012 season, won 93 games, and went a ridiculous 29-9 in one run games. Many knowledgeable baseball writers still believe the success had more to do with luck than the skill of the Orioles. After all, the team only outscored their opponents by seven runs during the season, and using Pythagorean winning percentage, the team should have only finished 82-80, according to Baseball Reference. An offseason that saw no major additions to the roster, and a few key departures such as Mark Reynolds, has only added to the belief that the birds will return to being the punching bag for the …

I predict that I will be very happy when the season begins and I hope the O's do even better than last season. I went to a record number of games last year. I'd like to repeat that again too, although I can't make prediction on that yet.   more ›

Legendary Orioles Manager Earl Weaver Dies, Baltimore Area Reacts

Share your reaction to Earl Weaver's legacy in the comments.

Earl Weaver's sudden death at 82 years old has rocked the Baltimore area and baseball aficionados nationwide.  Weaver died around 2 a.m. Saturday while on board an Orioles fantasy cruise in the Caribbean. His wife, Marianna, was at his side when he succumbed to a heart attack, the New York Daily News reported.  The news broke while many fans were headed to the Orioles' annual FanFest at the Baltimore Convention Center, across the street from Camden Yards. Weaver's career and what he meant to Baltimore was on the lips of many fans and players. Weaver's No. 4 hung above the discussion panel stage, and his jersey was posted on the left side of the stage. Weaver's Baltimore Sun obituary described the Hall of Famer as a "cantankerous baseball …

VIDEO: Orioles Fan Flies In From Miami For Game 2

Brandon Davis and his mom, Edye Stewart, were at Oriole Park at Camden Yards Monday.

Brandon Davis decided he could do without some of his musical equipment. What he couldn't do without: experiencing an Orioles playoff game. So the Anne Arundel County native—a 2002 South River High School grad—hocked some of his personal items from his Miami residence in order to catch a flight and land a ticket to see the Orioles play in Game 2 of the American League Division Series Monday in Baltimore. Davis, 29, and his mother, Edye Stewart, sat about 10 rows off the field along the right field line as the Orioles defeated the Yankees, 3-2. See the video for more from Stewart and Davis. Davis is retired from the military. Monday was his first game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards since the 1997 season. The Orioles carried a similar …

One Goal Down, One To Go For Orioles

The Orioles will host the Yankees Sunday and Monday at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Nick Markakis stood perched, ready for takeoff atop the third base dugout railing Friday night in Texas . And when Nate McLouth made the game-ending catch in left field to clinch the American League Wildcard showdown for the Orioles, Markakis leapt with joy. Markakis was in a hoodie, sitting out with a broken thumb, watching from the top step of the dugout as the most visible cheerleader in the ballpark. Under his watch, the Orioles reached one goal Friday—earning a home postseason game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. That will happen on Sunday. But one goal remains, manager Buck Showalter said—staying active in the postseason long enough for Markakis, now a veteran leader in the clubhouse, to take part in the magical ride. Markakis' …

Orioles Fans Get First Crack At Tiebreaker Tickets

If the Orioles and Yankees meet in a tiebreaker Thursday, Orioles fans may rule the Yard.

The Orioles are preparing for a homefield advantage should a Game No. 163 be required. The Orioles and Yankees entered Monday tied for the American League East division lead. Both have clinched a playoff spot, but the division penant may come down to the season finale on Wednesday. If the clubs tie for the division crown, they'd meet Thursday in a one-game playoff at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The winner would advance to the American League Division Series, the loser would play in the one-game American League Wild Card Playoff on Friday. Tickets for that potential one-game tie-breaker go on sale to the public Tuesday afternoon, and the Orioles are limiting it to fans living in the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network broadcasting region. VIDEO: Ripken Tells Why 'Orioles Magic' is Back

Legendary shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. said the Baltimore Orioles have developed new confidence.

The last time the Baltimore Orioles made the playoffs, Cal Ripken Jr. was still playing for the team. It was 1997. On Friday at the Perry Hall Giant, after accepting a donation toward his charity, Ripken reflected on the team's new found confidence and the influence of manager Buck Showalter. "This new form of Orioles magic—it's built on strong solid pitching and miraculous late-inning comebacks ... the bullpen is excellent and they believe in themselves," Ripken said. "We all bear the burden of feeling like it's been a long time since we've had a winning season, but this particular group of players is looking at it from this point in time. It's not like any of the other seasons," he added. What do you think has made the biggest difference…
