Owners of the concert venue plan to start construction of the Torrent Lounge nightclub in late-March.
(Update 3:49 p.m.)—After a nearly 17-year run, the Recher Theatre, a well-known Towson concert venue, is closing its doors. The Recher family, which owns the venue and the attached bar and restaurant The Rec Room, plans to convert the space into a nightclub called Torrent Lounge. "The [nightclub] scene is doing much better," said Brian Recher, who co-owns the spot with his brothers Steve Recher and Scott Recher. "The younger kids are going toward the DJ scene more." The Rechers have already started the first phase of the transition by revamping patio space at the venue. County records show two recent incidents at the Towson bar where a melee broke out Sunday morning.
Four days before a melee outside the Recher Theatre, county officials met with an owner of the bar to discuss security and crowd control measures. The meeting, which was at the request of Brian Recher, was in response to a letter sent by the county Liquor Board Commission after a minor incident in August, according to Mike Mohler, chief administrator for the board. "It was a good meeting where the owner reviewed all his security, crowd control and under-age drinking control measures," said Mohler. Jack Milani, co-chairman of the Baltimore County Licensed Beverage Association, said he typically advises liquor license holders to be proactive in their dealings with the county when issues arise. UPDATED (8:27 p.m.)—Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson Tuesday said he expected the events that led to a brawl outside the Recher Theater Sunday would not repeat themselves. The chief may get to test those words later when the sold out Barstool Blackout Tour comes to the venue. The tour was expected to be at the bar Wednesday. "Due to recent events and circumstances beyond our control in the Towson area this show will have to be postponed until a later date," promoters said on a statement on their website. The venue is not profitable. But I don't think a nightclub is the answer. I think they should have kept it a concert venue and hired a more qualified booking agent. more ›
