Thank you for that Councilman. The last thing we need is more development without consideration for the impact on the school system.

On the article POLL: Should School Start Later In Towson?
Lily

ReplyI think the only reason the schools start times are what they are is because the county uses the same set of buses so the high school kids get picked up first, then the buses go out and pick up middle school kids, then they get the elemantary. So there are three different start times and the magnet schools have thier own start times as well. It all revolves around busing and keeping the transportation costs reasonable. But my kids are awake by 6:00am on their own every morning and they are in elemantary. I could easily have them on a bus the ealier bus. They just need to flip the two times... of course that would mean elemantary kids would get out early and more after care costs for parents.

ReplyThis isn't about not wanting to attend school If the day starts later it will end later. It's about the sleep patterns that adolescents need for brain development. http://www.sleepfoundation.org/article/sleep-topics/school-start-time-and-sleep
what they need to do is flip flop the times for high school and elemantary school because elemantary kids wake naturally at the crack of dawn and high school kids don't.

On the article Dance Further Delays Magnet School Rule Decision

ReplyIf he uses the time very very wisely, he might just be able to get rid of sibling placement and do it in a way no one will care. After all sibling placement only matters if there are waiting lists. When anyone who wants to go to a magnet school can then sibling priority placement is mute. If in the "delay" time he cures the problem of overcrowding in Towson such that CVE and Lutherville no longer have any waiting lists and the schools can meet demand then siblings won't need a priority placement to get in. They will get in just like everyone else. The lottery also would be mute. Really it's the overcrowding that is the real problem. In that situtation the delay could allow for the new school to be built etc. It could work that way. Maybe.

On the article Legislation Would Ease Pressure on Pit Bull Owners and Landlords

ReplyCity landlords might have a shot at being more selective in tenants if the city didn't protect the derelict ones so damn much. For instance the city rent court records are not online like other judiciary case search files are and they are filed by the landlord name and not the tenant so there is no way to search a city tenant's history. Plus it take three solid months to complete an eviction. Not to mention the messed up water bill system that bills you for more water than is capable of comeing through the system in the first place. City landlords can't vote in the city so they can't change anything. The city coddles the worst citizens it has and drives the responsible ones out.

ReplyAs to busing, many if not most of the children at almost any elementary school do not live within walking distance and so they are bused. Almost all the school zones are "commuter" zones. It doesn't really matter how you swing a similar number of kids will be bused somewhere and there is no way you could have a school that is all walkers so there is no way to save $575,000. We are not wasting money and to say that building a new school is wasting money really fails to understand the depth of the problem BCPS has because the areas of overcrowding don't have land to build more schools or expand existing ones. This is what happens when more people live in a small area that the area infrastructure can't support. Why don't some of you move to Parkville. It's right next door and we have plenty of room. It's cheaper too.

ReplyIt should be considered also that sometimes renovating a building is not cheaper than building a new one. There are building codes that did not exist when some of these buildings where built that when you start renovating the properties have to come up to existing codes. This can result in a domino effect that gets more expensive with each step of the renovation. So you tear down wall A and discover B which means you have to do C but there is no D what is necessary in C So now C and D are added to the renovation and up the cost. You also have to have addition room for parking/infrastructure ect. It's not like playing with legos. You don't just go buy another box and put them together.

Replywhen you have all the surrounding local schools over capacity to a total of about 630 students then you need a new building. There is a limit to how much you can expand a local elementary and the county is renovating some of the schools that it makes sense to renovate. The York rd corridor needs to create about 1000 seats between renovations and the new school.

I'm really sorry the children at this event had to witness this. Both were at fault for immature behavior given that this was nothing more than a photo op for the children to be used in announcements/school news etc. Thank God for whoever did the video editing for school news because you can't tell anything happened from it. KK should be more controlled but I'm disappointed that these seniors behaved this way in the presence of children. Thank you Dr. Dance for remaining composed as usual in the face idiocracy.
