The incident was intended to be part of a large spree of robbing businesses along Greenmount, between the Able and Better Waverly neighborhoods in North Baltimore.

The assailants did not steal anything from Freddie Jones, but robbed the other customer of $9 or $10.

Two nights later, Markell Jones' grandfather contacted police to report his grandson as a suspect after local television news outlets broadcasted the surveillance video. Jones later turned himself in and confessed.

He pleaded guilty to the murder on May 27.

"This was an appalling act of violence perpetrated against a gentleman who was merely going about his routine business," State’s Attorney Gregg L. Bernstein said in the release. "We are gratified by the outcome and hope it helps the victim’s loved ones to achieve a sense of closure."
